Plan For Statewide Keno Hits Snag

03-21-2008

Governor Ted Strickland’s plan to institute a new spin on the lottery to help make up a $773 million dollar deficit has hit a snag.

The State Controlling Board, which was to hear a request for $18 million dollars which would be used to by Keno machines would leave the plan hanging.

The board is made up of 7 members, 4 of whom are republicans who said they would not vote for the contract with the GTECH Corporation until the Lottery Commission presents its public hearing and the final rule changes to allow Keno are put in place.

Some critics have called the plan an extension of gambling which they claim flies in the face of the public opinion, since voters have vetoed slot machines in the country.

Governor Strickland said the Keno proposal could raise $73 million to help with the projected deficit.
