Skybus Shuts Down, Stranding Thousands

04-07-2008

The abrupt shutdown of Skybus Airlines at midnight Saturday continued to cause havoc over the weekend as thousands of travelers scrambled to find new flights home.

A story from the AP says, many of them also wanted answers, stunned that they were left stranded with no warning.

''How can they do that?'' asked Christine Skorb, who along with her daughter, flew into Columbus from Chicopee, Mass., on Friday to visit family. Skorb, who works as a nurse, said she was angry because she had no idea how she would get home.

''It's taking advantage of people up until the very last moment to make sure they can get the last buck,'' she said. ''They're ripping people off for that last dollar.''

The situation is a black mark for an industry that might need tighter regulation in the future to guard against such problems, one business expert said.

Skybus allowed many travelers to board flights when the company knew the return trip would be canceled. The company's Web site also continued booking flights well into Friday evening while the airline prepared for the shutdown.
