Morrow County, Others Under Firewood Quarantine

07-31-2009
A tree-killing beetle has expanded its range in Ohio, prompting the state to add five more counties to a quarantine zone.

Ashland, Richland, Summit, Greene, and Morrow are now on the list of counties from which it's illegal to remove ash trees or parts, as well as any hardwood firewood.

The restrictions are meant to slow the spread of the emerald ash borer. The Ohio Department of Agriculture said Tuesday that the presence of the destructive beetle has been confirmed in the five counties by federal agriculture officials.

Fifty of Ohio's 88 counties have now been quarantined. People who move firewood or ash trees in violation of the law may face fines up to $4,000.
