Tonight as I walked my beagle dog down some fence rows so she could chase some rabbits, I couldn’t help but think about September 11th .
The day the World Trade Center was no more. I started thinking about the country I live in and the freedom I take for granted.
I keep hearing that the people responsible for the acts of terrorism are jealous of the U.S.A. and it’s people. Jealous of our freedoms that so many of us are taking for granted. Simple little things. Our right to choose any religion we want. Our right to say what we feel. Just the right to walk my dog where I choose.
Just to think that the people that live in the same country as the people that blew up The Twin Towers and killed over five-thousand people can’t even walk down the street with out worrying about getting shot at. There children can’t play like children should. Most of the children carry semi-automatic rifles. There are no walks through the park on warm Spring days. No walking with loved ones under lush green trees or through grassy meadows. It’s a struggle just to have a nice meal every night.
You never hear anyone talking about the great hunting opportunities in Afghanistan or Pakistan. They are to busy fighting one another to enjoy what little they do have. That’s why I am grateful to be living as an American.
I feel everyone should take this time and really think about what it means to be an American and think about the real freedom we do have and remember those that lost their lives to let us stay free.
The nip in the air, The migrating birds and Fall colors. It’s that time again. Hunting season. This has got to be one of my favorite times of the year.
Bow season is just beginning and already I am anticipating an encounter with that huge buck of my dreams. I have decided to take a few weeks at the beginning of this hunting season and hunt with my video camera and my 35 mm camera. If all goes well I will be able to video my hunting buddy making a bow kill. I plan on posting any still pictures here so check back once in a while and check them out.
If you plan on putting up a tree stand here are a few helpful hints I have learned. 1. Pick a straight tree. 2. My opinion, the higher you go the better. I go about twenty feet high. 3. Try and find a tree with branches behind you to brake up your silhouette. 4. Here is a BIG one. I learned last season that the rope you use to pull up your bow with should always be pulled up to your stand. I actually had a really nice broad racked (definitely a shooter) buck walk right underneath my climbing tree stand and look at my rope that I lowered back down after I had my pulled my bow up. He stared at the end, then went on to follow the rope up the tree to the point where It was tied to my stand. At that time I was looking right through the metal grate between my boots right into the eyes of one of the smartest deer I have ever seen. Well that’s all it took and a few seconds later he was well out of bow range.
I recommend hunting with a buddy. No matter what your hunting. That way if something ever happens you have someone to help or to go get help. If you don’t have a hunting buddy make sure someone knows where you are and at what time you plan on returning. Never go hunting without telling someone where you are. You might be in the woods laying injured for a long time.
Rabbit season will be here before you know It and I can tell my dog just can’t wait. Rabbit hunting has got to be the best. It’s fast and furious and nothing beats getting out with the guys stomping around laughing and shooting lots of bunnies.
Water fowl season is well under way and from what I have heard the duck population is down just a little from last year but I am sure it will be a good season. I think I am going to concentrate on my bow hunting more this year so I plan on laying off the goose and duck hunting a little bit.
I am looking forward to a great bow season, shotgun season and who knows maybe I will have another great muzzle loading season this year.
I always look forward to receiving any pictures for our outdoor picture page. I know everyone has a picture they would like to see posted there.
Until next time happy hunting. Be safe!
